WEEK TWO READINGS

I believed the key message from this reading were the wide and expansive opportunities the PR profession can offer us as graduates. The readings were also focuses on explaining what PR actually is and the essential skills required for the profession, for example the importance of excellent communication, spelling and grammar skills. After reading this I know I will need to improve spelling and grammar skills. This is an area I tend to be slack in. The highlighted the overlapping nature of PR with marketing and advertising, but explained the social focus of PR and however PR protects reputations and influences public opinion.

The readings made the think more about PR in practice as they corrected the misconceptions of PR as a job of purely glamour and celebrity. I think Kim Catrell’s character Samantha on the TV series Sex and City contributed towards this misconception. It was interesting to know PR w0as originally a male dominated profession and how today it is female dominated. Looking around my tutorial for intro to Public Relations the number of females clearly outweighs the males. I found the types of PR positions mentioned useful as it was comforting to know I have selected the right major for my desired career path.

Hi taegan!,

I thought you're blog was very helpful to other students who were maybe feeling a little bit concerned about some of the misconceptions about public relations, or perhaps about their own level of skills. It is refreshing to see you're honesty, but don't worry because i'm sure a lot of people, including myself, have some skills they tend to slack off in!

You're point relating to the character in Sex and the City is very true. Characters on television contribute greatly to misconceptions of practitioners, with old fashioned links being too close to entertainment. This was the case in the 1930s but not now!

I think you're first point about the wide and expansive opportunities in PR is very true. One of the overwhelming messages I received from this weeks readings was the many different roles and activities that PR practitioners can perform.
